The Doctor’s Young Wife

Almost six-thirty
I sure got to hurry,
Don’t want an excuse for strife.
When I moved to Dallas,
And took the boys with me,
I knew it would cut like a knife.
The oldest has stayed,
A good man he made,
But the youngest went back to your life
So I’ll bring back your baby,
To the Banks of the Brazos,
And try to get on with my life
We’ll meet on the Banks of the Brazos,
Waco at quarter of ten
And try to survive on I-35,
Exchanging our wounded again
And cry all the way back to Dallas,
A terrible price to love twice
And fight back the tears,
As I think on those years,
When I was the doctor’s young wife,
The doctor from Austin’s young wife
My new love’s a honey,
He’s even got money,
And never thinks I’m at fault,
But somehow he misses,
When it comes to his kisses,
Like eating an egg without salt
Often I wonder,
If I made a blunder,
And if I would do it again,
Cause when you drive off,
I want to call off,
The battle that neither can win
We’ll meet on the Banks of the Brazos,
In Waco at quarter of ten.
and try to survive on I-35,
Exchanging the wounded again
And cry all the way back to Dallas,
A terrible price to love twice
And fight back the tears,
As I think on those years,
When I was the doctor’s young wife,
The doctor from Austin’s young wife
A match made in heaven,
Like rolling a seven,
We both had scriptural grounds
My new wife can cook,
It certainly “took,”
We’ve both put on thirty pounds
She’s fifteen years younger,
But she can’t make it thunder,
Together like we used to do
Her temper is mild,
But she can’t share our child,
Our memories of Austin and you
We’ll meet on the Banks of the Brazos,
At the truck-stop at a quarter of ten
and try to survive on I-35,
Exchanging our wounded again
And cry all the way back to Austin,
A terrible price to love twice
And fight back the tears,
As I think on the years,
When she was the doctor’s young wife,
The doctor from Austin’s young wife
So when things start to blow,
And you want to let go,
Just look for a place to begin
To start it all over,
Life can’t all be clover,
It’s a struggle that no one will win
If you can’t forgive,
You are destined to live,
With someone whose bound to have sin
So take some advice,
From two who’ve loved twice,
You get a chance to forgive it again
We’ll meet on the Banks of the Brazos,
In Waco at quarter of ten
and try to survive on I-35,
Exchanging wounded again
And cry all the way back from Waco,
A terrible price to love twice
And fight back the tears,
As we think on those years,
When we were the doctor and wife
The doctor from Austin and wife
